Whales in different ocean basins sing different songs. Bird populations separated by geography develop distinct dialects. This isn't a curiosity — it's a signal packed with information about population structure, migration, and cultural transmission.

Why dialects matter for conservation

If two populations sound different, acoustics can tell them apart without ever seeing an animal. That means:

  • Population monitoring from sound alone.
  • Detecting isolated or at-risk groups before visual surveys could.
  • Tracking cultural change over time as songs shift.
